Grateful Dead Inspired Recycled Silk Curtain Colorways
What a long strange trip it's been since Mexicali owners Kim and Pete first found these recycled silk panel curtains in Jaipur, India. Needless to say, it was love at first sight and here we are, many moons later, and these curtains, along with their unique recycled origins and the powerful stories they tell, continue to captivate us. Whether hanging in a boho bedroom window, draped as a canopy, or fluttering like a flag behind a boat, these curtains can breathe life into any space.
However, over the years, naming these curtains has been a seemingly impossible task. How do you attribute meaning to something so intangible as a psychedelic combination of textures, colors, and patterns? How do you assign a color to a chameleon, curtains changing colors all the time? How do you define a piece of art? How do you tell such a complicated story with so few words?
A group of Mexicali minds got together to try and find an answer to this question, a solution to this seemingly impossible equation. They started off taking inspiration from nature; mountains, rivers, deserts, and volcanoes. Then they looked to the globe, seeking inspiration from far-off cityscapes; New Delhi, Bangkok, Oaxaca, Antigua. Next, they sought solace in time; sunrise, sunset, dusk, and golden light. They were all good ideas, but they all lacked something… a dimension, a poetic form of expression that speaks to the complicated colorways and unique origins of each curtain.
Then, our customer service wizard Melissa asked the important question… “What would Jerry do?” The answer was clear, written in the psychedelic songs of the Grateful Dead. The cosmic connection was Dark Star, the flames were found in Fire in the Mountain, the needle in the haystack was Jack Straw, the flower power was Sugar Magnolia, the oceanic elements were Morning Dew, and the silver lining was found in Shakedown Street. As an international imports store named after a Grateful Dead song, the answer was easy, and the rest is history.
